2E, in everyday words
Twice-exceptional, or 2E, describes a learner who is gifted in one or more areas and also has a co-occurring disability.
Both can be true
Your child may find some things easy and need real help with others. Being good at one thing does not make the hard things any less real.
Look beyond a single result
A grade or a finished worksheet cannot tell you everything about your child’s day. Their interests, effort, and experience matter too.
An established educational term
The National Association for Gifted Children describes a twice-exceptional learner as a gifted student with a co-occurring disability. This helps explain why a child may need opportunities to develop their strengths as well as support for a disability. The term alone does not tell us what an individual child needs.
You do not need all the answers today
For us, learning about 2E began with trying to understand our own family. This is a place to share that experience, not a checklist for deciding whether a child is 2E.
